As a result of COVID-19, the Corona virus, the Dutch banks decided to increase the contactless payment limits.

On 19 March 2020, the Dutch banks announced that they would raise the limits. These measures ensure that consumers need to touch the payment terminal as little as possible while paying.

There are two limits:

  1. The payment limit per payment
  2. The cumulative payment limit

Payment limit per payment

The payment limit per payment was € 25,-. For amounts higher than € 25,- your customers had to enter their PIN code. The payment processing parties have increased this limit, so that your customers can pay an amount up to  € 50,- without entering a PIN code.

Cumulative payment limit

The so-called cumulative limit for contactless payments works as follows: if a customer has made contactless payments with their payment card for € 50, the customer was still asked to enter the PIN code on the payment terminal. The card-issuing parties increased the limit to € 100,-.

Did your customer, after making a number of purchases, add up to € 100,-? Then the customer will still be asked to enter the PIN code.

Both increases apply to the payment methods MasterCard, Visa, Maestro, V Pay, Bancontact & American Express.

Return pins

Would you like to refund an amount to your customer by means of return pins? We advise you to use the chip in the payment card instead of contactless. Unfortunately, the transaction is not fully or properly processed when processed contactless.

Changes on your payment terminal

Have you rented an EMS payment terminal from EMS?
Then a download must take place on your payment terminal to make the changes. See here how you can easily start it manually.
